Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Draft Prison Rules.

Michael McDowell

Ceist:

21 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to implement the draft prison rules; when implementation of these rules will commence; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12858/96]

Draft prison rules which were prepared by the Department were published in June 1994 as an appendix to the Department's policy document "The Management of Offenders — A Five year Plan".

The draft rules were referred to the Attorney General's office some time ago and discussion regarding their conditions is ongoing. It appears that some of the proposed rules will require modifications on foot of the advice of the Attorney General. Discussions on these modifications are currently taking place between the Attorney General's office and the Department. It is the Minister's intention that this matter be given priority and that the new rules will be implemented as soon as possible.
