Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Reform of Bail Law.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

60 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, she has in relation to reform of the law of bail; if so, the status and nature of such proposals; when she will announce, in detail, the promised reforms; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12856/96]

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

140 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the widespread concern regarding offenders who are involved in further crime while on bail; if she will give details of her consideration of and progress on this matter over the last 18 months; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12977/96]

I propose to take Question Nos. 60 and 140 together. I am, of course, aware of widespread concern at the problem of offending while on bail.

I have concluded my examination of the Law Reform Commission report on the law of bail and I am at present consulting my colleagues in Government on detailed proposals arising from that examination.

The House will appreciate that the issues involved are extremely complex and I cannot say precisely when the Government's deliberations will be concluded. In its fight against crime the Government has already brought into place strong measures to tackle crime and will continue to do so.
