Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

James McDaid

Ceist:

147 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for the Environment when Letterkenny Urban District Council will receive an allocation of money to fund its plans regarding the inner and outer relief roads planned for the town in order to ease the chronic traffic congestion and to facilitate development. [13513/96]

Letterkenny Urban District Council received a grant of £120,000 in 1995 and Donegal County Council received a grant allocation of £125,000 this year under the EU cofinanced scheme of grants to complete the circular road, which forms part of the Letterkenny inner relief road. The remaining section of the inner relief road, from Port Bridge to the town centre, is estimated to cost £1.8 million; an allocation of £70,000 for land purchase has been made to Donegal County Council in 1996 under the EU Interreg II programme for the project. The cost of the Letterkenny outer relief road project is also estimated to be in the region of £1.8 million. I have not received an application from either local authority for funding for this project.

Ceist:

148 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for the Environment when Letterkenny Urban District Council will receive funding for a sewerage improvement scheme in view of the fact that Donegal County Council is the promoter of the scheme. [13514/96]

Letterkenny sewerage improvement scheme, which is being administered fully by Donegal County Council on behalf of Letterkenny Urban District Council, is included in the application for the Swilly catchment water quality management scheme for financial assistance under the Cohesion Fund. Stage I, which provides for the planning of the Letterkenny sewage treatment plant, has been approved by the European Commission. The county council is now about to carry out an environmental impact assessment of the proposed plant.
