301 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on the irresponsible allegations regarding Irish beef; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13606/96]
If the Deputy is referring to recent media reports concerning the alleged dumping of beef falsely labelled as Irish in certain third countries, the position is that the reports have been investigated and are without substance. All exports of beef from Ireland are accompanied by the appropriate veterinary certification which attests to the origin and the whole-someness of the product. There is no evidence that other beef is being marketed under the Irish label in third countries.
The recent BSE crisis has created a very difficult marketing situation for all beef exporters. Considerable resources have been devoted to the promotion of the quality and safety of Irish beef and allegations of the kind referred to by the Deputy undermines these efforts.
