Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Plastic Diesel/Oil Tanks.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

336 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will formulate appropriate regulations and standards in relation to the use of plastic diesel/oil storage tanks; whether the European Standards Organisation is currently preparing a standard in respect of such tanks, including their installation; if so, when this will be finalised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14050/96]

CEN — the European Committee for Standardisation, of which Ireland is a member, is currently drafting a European Standard for plastic diesel/oil tanks.

The provision of EC Directive 83/189 require that national standards should not be adopted if work of the same nature is in progress at EU level. The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) is informing this work by reference to Irish interests and conditions.

NSAI estimate that the European standard will not be finalised until 1998. When the CEN standard is published, member states will be obliged to adopt it as a national standard.
