Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Mayo Planting.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

385 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the reason a plot of land (details supplied) in County Mayo was deemed unsuitable for planting in view of the fact that the adjoining land was approved. [14237/96]

It is a condition of the afforestation scheme that land being planted must be of a sufficiently high yield class to produce a crop of wood that is commercially viable. The site in question was found on inspection to be unsuitable to produce such a crop. The adjoining land referred to by the Deputy is located over a mile away from the site in question. It is the case that within the same general area, soil and site conditions can vary appreciably such that one area may be considered eligible for grant while another is not.
