Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - National Cancer Strategy.

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

65 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Health whether the review group established by him to prepare a comprehensive cancer strategy has reported; if so, the recommendations made in this report; the proposals, if any, he will implement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14817/96]

John Ellis

Ceist:

117 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to deal with cancer; and if he will give a date for the publication of the Government paper on this issue. [14373/96]

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 65 and 117 together.

I am preparing a National Cancer Strategy at present which will take account of the work done by the Cancer Strategy Group which I established last year. The strategy will be a wide-reaching statement on the organisation and development of cancer services in Ireland. It will cover such areas as health promotion, screening and early detection, organisation of primary and hospital-based treatment services, palliative care and cancer research.

The Cancer Strategy is at an advanced stage of preparation and I hope to be in a position to publish it in the near future.
