Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sexual Abuse Allegations.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

88 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Health whether the Medical Council has taken action, under section 51 of the Medical Practitioners Act, against a hospital consultant in the north-east who is the subject of sexual abuse allegations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14207/96]

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

89 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Health whether a hospital consultant in the north-east, who is the subject of 50 complaints of sexual misconduct, has been suspended from the Medical Register under section 53 of the Medical Practitioners Act; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14208/96]

Limerick East): I propose to take Question Nos. 88 and 89 together. The Medical Council has informed me that unless otherwise directed by the High Court pursuant to the provisions of section 51 of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978, the council is precluded by the provisions of the Act from making any comment or providing any information as to complaints against registered medical practitioners pending the determination of the procedures contained in the Act in relation to complaints. I might add that the Register of Medical Specialists referred to in section 53 has not yet been established. I do not consider that it would be appropriate for me to make any further comment on the specific matters raised by the Deputies.
