Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

109 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, which has been made regarding the provision of funding for a national school (details supplied) in County Cork; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that failure to provide this funding is continuing to cause serious concern in the village; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17067/96]

My Department's technical advisers are currently preparing contract documents for works at the school referred to by the Deputy. When the contract documentation is ready, a decision on the timing of the tender process will be taken in the light of available financial resources.

A grant was sanctioned by my Department for necessary heating works at the school. This work has been completed and the grant was paid on 29 August. Due to financial constraints,. I am not in a position to sanction further works at the school.

My Department has not yet concluded the acquisition of the building referred to by the Deputy. I am aware of the concerns expressed and I can assure the people concerned that progress is being made.

Ceist:

112 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction the appointment of a teacher to a school (details supplied) in County Cork; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that an application for this teacher was made in March 1995; and if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that there are a total of 36 students enrolled for the all-Irish stream. [17070/96]

The Deputy will recall that I responded to a parliamentary question on 3 July 1996 concerning this matter.

I regret it has not been possible to approve the application for additional staffing from the school to which the Deputy refers. The school authorities were informed of this decision, and the reasons for it, on 12 August 1996.
