Vol. 469 No. 2

Written Answers. - Concessionary Teaching Post.

Noel Davern

Ceist:

105 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Education if she will reinstate the concessionary teaching post at Ballingarry national school, Thurles, County Tipperary, as requested by the board of management in view of the school's disadvantaged status and the current staffing levels at the school; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17042/96]

The authorised staffing at Ballingarry national school for the 1996-7 school year, which is determined by reference to its enrolment on 30 September 1995, consists of a principal and three assistant teachers. In addition, the school has the services of a shared remedial teacher.

As a designated disadvantaged school, a maximum class size guideline of 29 pupils applies in the case of all classes at this school. If the current enrolment cannot be managed within this guideline, the managerial authorities of the school should contact my Department, at which stage consideration will be given to reinstating the additional post assigned to the school in the 1994-5 school year to ensure that maximum class size guidelines were not breached.
