Vol. 470 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

107 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the amount of grant aid allocated for arts and culture projects during the past two years to Galway city and county and Waterford city and county. [18683/96]

The Galway Theatre project, including the "Black Box" Performance Space, is the only specific arts and culture project in Counties Galway and Waterford on which moneys were expended directly by my Department since 1 January 1995. The expenditure involved amounted to some £1.8 million. The Deputy will be aware that the grave need for this project had been recognised by successive Governments for many years and I am pleased that it was finally brought to fruition during my term of office.

Moneys allocated, but not yet expended, for arts and culture projects in the two counties during the same period are as follows:

£

Waterford Theatre Royal

562,000

Galway Arts Centre

250,000

Ionad Cultúrtha, Inis Oírr, Aran Islands

90,000

These amounts were approved by me under the cultural development incentives scheme, which is administered by my Department under the EU Operational Programme for Tourism, 1994-99.
The figures do not include moneys expended or approved directly by the Arts Council during the period in question. In addition, the figures do not include moneys expended or approved in respect of projects which are funded from allocations provided to my Department for the promotion of the Irish language — although some such projects may also have arts and or cultural aspects.
