Vol. 470 No. 5

Written Answers. - BSE Inspectors.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

38 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry whether there is only one BSE evaluator in the country; and the number of people involved in monitoring and evaluating the BSE situation. [19386/96]

Up to recently one inspector of my Department's staff carried out the stock evaluation required for BSE depopulation purposes; he was assisted in each case by the local livestock inspector. A second inspector has been assigned to this work and should this prove inadequate I will assign extra resources as required. The other control functions in relation to BSE are dealt with by the veterinary and research staff operating at local and central level as part of their general duties on disease control.
