Vol. 470 No. 5

Written Answers. - Control of Dogs.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

76 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the number of dogs in the State; the consideration, if any, he has given to dog control; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19502/96]

There is no reliable estimate available of the total dog population in this country. Under existing legislation, responsibility for the control of dogs is vested in county councils and county borough corporations. The legislation requires these authorities to employ dog wardens, empowers the wardens to seize stray dogs and provides that dogs must be licensed and kept under effectual control at all times.
