The entry requirements for recruitment to the Garda Síochána are a matter for the Civil Service Commission in consultation with the Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice.
For each year between 1992 and 1996 an alternative mathematics syllabus was available at ordinary level in the leaving certificate examination. This syllabus was considered to be of similar standard to the syllabus at ordinary level but was more practical in orientation. The Garda Síochána did not consider that the alternative ordinary level mathematics course met the conditions for recruitment.
