Vol. 470 No. 6

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

41 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health if he will have an investigation made into the case of a person (details supplied) in County Cork who is terminally ill and who has been placed on a waiting list for radiotherapy; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this person is a medical card holder; and if he will have arrangements made for her to be treated without further delay. [19644/96]

Limerick East): I have had inquiries made of the hospital authorities concerning this matter. I understand that this patient was seen by the consultant radiotherapist at Cork University Hospital in early October 1996.

Following a series of diagnostic tests, arrangements for the patient's clinical management were agreed between the consultant radiotherapist and the ENT surgeon at the hospitals involved. She is now receiving the appropriate clinical attention under the care of the consultant in palliative care medicine at Marymount Hospice. I have been advised that the patient's family have been kept fully informed at all times.

Ceist:

42 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health the reason for the delay in having a person (details supplied) in County Cork admitted to hospital for treatment of an eye cataract. [19648/96]

, Limerick East ): I have had inquiries made regarding this matter and I have been advised that this patient was offered surgery in August 1995, but she refused it. She attended the out-patient's clinic at the hospital on 1 February 1996 and was placed on the in-patient waiting list.

However, if this patient's general practitioner feels that her condition has deteriorated or that she needs a more urgent admission date, he should contact the hospital directly for a further assessment.
