Vol. 470 No. 8

Written Answers. - Provision of All Irish Post-Primary School.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

107 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education, further to her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 43 of 3 October 1996, the reason the request for a further all Irish post-primary school in north-east Dublin is under active consideration when, by her own figures, as per the reply, there is currently spare capacity in the existing all Irish schools in the north of Dublin; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20175/96]

When an application for the provision of additional educational facilities of any type in an area is submitted to my Department, that application is considered in the light of all relevant factors, such as the adequacy of existing provision, demographic trends and likely future demand. An application for additional facilities would not be approved or rejected without a full examination being carried out.

While it is considered that the existing all Irish post primary schools on the northside of Dublin can meet present demands, the need remains to monitor the situation with a view to establishing likely future trends.

It is in this context that the application for the establishment of a new all Irish post-primary school in north-east Dublin is being examined by my Department.
