Vol. 471 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax Amnesty.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

41 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Finance when all the forms of evidence of payment made to the Chief Special Collector in relation to the tax amnesty will have been examined by the Collector General; the number of forms which have been examined to date; the amount which has been discharged on the basis of examination of such forms; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20292/96]

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that, as at end October, 7,876 forms of evidence of participation in the 15 per cent incentive amnesty have been produced by taxpayers to the Collector-General. According as the Revenue Commissioners continue to pursue outstanding liabilities on record for the relevant periods, further forms of evidence are likely to be produced by taxpayers on an ongoing basis. In relation to the forms of evidence already received, 3,920 cases have already been fully dealt with and £18,966,895 has been discharged from the tax records. I am informed by the Commissioners that the work is time-consuming and that, while substantial inroads will be made into the remaining cases on hands by the end of the year, the work will continue into 1997.
