To date, a total of £242,250 has been made available to Galway, Donegal and Mayo county councils for island access projects and I expect to be in a position to confirm funding to Cork county council shortly. Details of projects which have received funding to date are listed in the following schedule.
A number of projects are still being assessed by the interdepartmental co-ordinating committee and I hope to be in a position to announce further funding in respect of these from the financial envelope shortly.
On foot of the report of the interdepartmental co-ordinating committee on island development, new mechanisms have been established in order to deal with the development of access and related infrastructural work on the offshore islands, which was identified as a priority issue and towards which the Government made available an additional £1 million this year. Island access projects are selected and prioritised by the islands committees of the relevant local authorities. These projects are then assessed by the interdepartmental co-ordinating committee and recommendations regarding funding subsequently made. Funding in respect of each priority access project is allocated to the relevant local authorities in accordance with normal Government accounting requirements.
Funds have been made available for priority access projects and will continue to be made available on the basis of proposals agreed by the local authorities islands committees. All proposals with the objective of achieving an acceptable level of access services to offshore islands will be considered by the interdepartmental co-ordinating committee.
In September 1995, Area Development Management Ltd. (ADM) and the Combat Poverty Agency (CPA) set up a Joint Management Committee to take responsibility for the joint implementation of the ADM and the CPA measures within the Peace and Reconciliation Programme.
The following indicates the measures and the amounts of aid allocated to ADM and CPA in the six Border counties.
