Vol. 472 No. 4

Written Answers. - Animal Diseases.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

139 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the criteria laid down for the disposal of carcases of cattle with BSE; the process of monitoring such disposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23409/96]

The carcases of animals confirmed to have been infected with BSE are either buried on the farm or destroyed by incineration. The brains from such animals will have already been removed for examination. Both the removal of the brains and the burial or incineration of the carcases takes place under the direct control of veterinary inspectors from my Department. Legislative provision for these measures are laid down in the Diseases of Animals (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) Order 1989.
