Vol. 472 No. 4

Written Answers. - Farm Income.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

141 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the preliminary estimate of farm income in 1996; the anticipated trend in this regard over the next five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23411/96]

I understand that the Central Statistics Office intends to publish its Advance Estimate of Agricultural Output, Input and Income next week. In the circumstances, I feel that it would be inappropriate for me, at this stage, to make any comment. When the CSO has published its estimate I will make a further statement on the matter.

With regard to incomes over the next five years, it is difficult to project these with any accuracy. Over this period a number of issues will arise in relation to CAP reform, a new round of world trade negotiations, structural funding and other matters, all of which may impact on farm incomes. It is my intention to ensure that the interests of Irish farmers are protected in any such developments.
