Vol. 472 No. 4

Written Answers. - Use of BSE Carcase Meal.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

63 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the use made of meat and bone meal from rendered BSE carcases; the measures, if any, in place to exclude such meat and bone meal from animal and human food chains; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23029/96]

As the Deputy is aware, where BSE is confirmed in an animal, it is my Department's policy to slaughter the entire herd in which that animal is located, as well as its birth cohorts and progeny. The carcases are then rendered and the resulting meat and bone meal and tallow are excluded from both the human food and animal feed chains. These products are currently being stored in secure premises supervised by the Department pending their destruction.
