Vol. 472 No. 4

Written Answers. - Committee Membership.

Séamus Hughes

Ceist:

79 Mr. Hughes asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the names of the persons on the Irish Advisory Committee and the National Committee for Development Education; whether these committees have full-time secretariats; the way in which a voluntary body interested in partnership with communities in the developing world would be represented on such committees; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23421/96]

Lists indicating the current membership of the Irish Aid Advisory Committee, IAAC, and the National Committee for Development Education follow.

In the case of the IAAC, the term of office of the existing committee has just expired and a new membership is due to be appointed. The makeup of the new committee will reflect a balance between continuity, to ensure that the existing work of the committee is not disrupted, and some change, to facilitate broad participation in the work of this committee. Care will be taken to ensure the committee membership includes the combination of experience and expertise necessary to address the complex issues of world development.

The Irish Aid Advisory Committee administrative staff comprises one full-time position of executive secretary and one part-time position of secretarial assistant to the executive secretary.
The term of office of the current National Committee for Development Education will expire on 1 October 1997. From the outset, the membership profile of the committee was intended to ensure appropriate representation from the various groups and organisations concerned with development education. In making the appointments to the committee in 1994, and in filling subsequent vacancies, due weight has been given to ensuring this. The majority of the members of the committee serve in a representative capacity and the following list indicates in each case the representative role played by the committee member. The committee makes grants to fund development education projects; it also has a role in promoting improved development education. To assist the committee in these roles, the NCDE has a full-time staff complement of five.
