Vol. 472 No. 6

Written Answers. - Health Insurance.

Brendan Kenneally

Ceist:

48 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Health if he intends to preserve the use of community rating in private health insurance, particularly bearing in mind the effect it would have on elderly people if it were to be abolished; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24077/96]

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

67 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Health if he will ensure full community rating in the provision of health insurance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23908/96]

Limerick East): The principle of community rating is regarded as an essential part of our health insurance system. Accordingly, section 7 of the Health Insurance Act, 1994, prohibits non-community rated health insurance contracts. I will fully uphold the principle of community rating as set out in the 1994 legislation.
