Vol. 473 No. 2

Written Answers. - Exhibition of Artefacts.

John O'Leary

Ceist:

61 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will have arrangements made for the annals of Innisfallen, currently in England, and the Innisfallen crozier, currently in the National Museum, to be made available to the public in Killarney, County Kerry, for at least one month each year during one of the shoulder seasons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24781/96]

The manuscript known as the "Annals of Innisfallen" is held in the Bodleian Library in Oxford and the matter of whether or not it should be lent for exhibition in Ireland is a matter for the authorities of the Bodleian Library.

The question of the exhibition of the Innisfallen crozier is a matter in the first instance for the director of the National Museum. I am advised that, due to the age and delicate condition of the artefact, a loan application could only be considered from an institution complying with a high level of international exhibition and security standards and consideration of any such application would have to have regard to the range of other factors involved including the museum's own exhibition programme.
