Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - Departmental Costs.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

67 Mr. Callely asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the total cost of mobile telephones and their use for the year ending 1996 for personnel working in his Department; and the estimated costs for 1997. [8541/97]

In 1996 in preparation for and during Ireland's Presidency of the EU a number of mobile phones were purchased for use by key personnel. Mobile phones were also rented for use by staff of the Department assigned to work on Presidency related matters. Their usage was essential to the conduct of a successful Presidency. Accounting records do not readily identify the cost of mobile phone rental-call charges abroad and it is not possible at this time to give a full and accurate statement of costs for 1996. Costs in 1997 are expected to be significantly lower as the level of costs associated with the Presidency in 1996 will not recur. The total costs of the mobile phones to the Office of the Tánaiste in 1996 amount to £7,767.06. This figure includes the costs of calls made, the line rentals and the once off purchase of necessary equipment. The estimated costs for 1997 are expected to be some £2,000 lower.
