Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Buildings Projects.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

174 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Health if he will allocate the necessary funding for new day-care facilities which involve a new building at St. Vincent's Hospital, Fairview, Dublin 3, in view of the fact that this was approved previously; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13689/97]

The need for a new day hospital at St. Vincent's Hospital, Fairview, is accepted by my Department. This development is one of a number of priority projects which will be considered for inclusion in the capital programme in the light of the availability of resources. As the Deputy will be aware, there are many demands on the Department's capital programme but I will make every effort to include as many of the priority developments as possible within the resources available.

Ceist:

175 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Health if he will provide the necessary funding for the phase two building programme of the Incorporated Orthopaedic Hospital of Ireland, Clontarf, Dublin 3; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13690/97]

The development of new facilities at the Incorporated Orthopaedic Hospital, Clontarf is an important part in the development of rehabilitation services in north Dublin. Following the completion of the first phase of the new development, a project team comprising representatives of the hospital and officials from my Department began work on a development brief for the second phase of the work required at the hospital. The brief for the second phase of the development includes provision for:

– three 32 bed wards

– physiotherapy and occupational therapy facilities

– X-ray and out-patients departments

– new kitchen and canteen

– boiler room and service accommodation

– new main entrance and reception area

The brief was submitted to my Department in December 1996 and is currently under consideration. I will, therefore, consider this project as favourably as possible within the constraints of the available resources. I recognise the important role played by the Incorporated Orthopaedic Hospital in the north Dublin hospital service.
