Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Adoption Legislation.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

218 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Health the obligation, if any, there is to amend our adoption legislation, particularly in the area of access to original birth record information, to comply with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. [14029/97]

Ireland ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in September 1992 and is fully committed to its implementation. There is some doubt as to whether the terms of the convention apply to the release of birth information to adoptive adults. It is expected that this issue will be clarified by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. The First National Report of Ireland under the Convention is due to be heard by the committee in Geneva in early 1998.
