Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Change of School Status.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

354 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the request by the CBS primary school, Convent Hill, Tramore, County Waterford to commence infant classes in September 1997. [14010/97]

The CBS primary school, Tramore, County Waterford submitted an application to my Department in 1996 for a change of status under rule 33 of the Rules for National Schools with a view to enroling boys at junior infants level. Currently, junior infants are enrolled in the local convent schools and transfer to the CBS at first standard. Having considered the matter in detail, my Department rejected the application, particularly in view of the effect such a decision would have on the enrolment and staffing in the convent school. The board of management of the CBS school, having obtained legal advice in the matter, subsequently wrote to my Department requesting a review of the case. The application was reconsidered but the Department remained of the view that it should be rejected. The chairperson of the board of management of CBS was informed of the decision by letter dated 3 June 1997.
