Vol. 480 No. 2

Declaration by Leas-Cheann Comhairle.

As this is the first occasion I have taken the Chair since my election I must perform my first official duty as Leas-Cheann Comhairle. In accordance with the new public Standing Order No. 9 of the Standing Orders relative to public business, I wish to make the following declaration: "I do solemnly declare that I will duly and faithfully and to the best of my knowledge and ability execute the office of Leas-Cheann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann without fear or favour, apply the rules as laid down by this House in an impartial and fair manner, maintain order and uphold the rights and privileges of Members in accordance with the Constitution and the Standing Orders of Dáil Éireann."

On behalf of this side of the House I wish you well in your new job and offer you our support. Obviously when necessary we will also challenge you when we want to put a point to the House.

I extend to you my warmest congratulations on your appointment as Leas-Cheann Comhairle. Everybody who has had the great privilege of knowing you in public life is aware of your outstanding commitment not only to your constituency but to the welfare and future of all the people. In every task you have been given by various Taoisigh and leaders in Opposition you have performed with great distinction and the utmost integrity. I cannot think of a finer occupant of the Chair.
