Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Trade Union Recognition.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

49 Mr. Gilmore asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise and Employment if her attention has been drawn to concerns expressed at the recent ICTU conference in Belfast regarding the resistance of many overseas companies to allow trade union representation; the steps, if any, she intends to take to protect the rights of trade unions to organise; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13757/97]

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

57 Mr. Noonan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise and Employment the input, if any, she will be making into the discussions on trade union recognition; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13730/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 49 and 57 together.

Partnership 2000 contains a commitment to establish a high level group, representative of interested parties, including my Department to consider proposals by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions concerning trade union recognition.
This group is currently being established under the auspices of the Department of the Taoiseach. I look forward to receiving its advice. This issue is clearly a very complex one. I will seek to give every assistance in the group to the social partners in their endeavour to arrive at mutually acceptable solutions. I will be taking account of all views expressed on this issue.
