Ceist:549 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education when he will sanction a secondary school for a town (details supplied) in County Mayo. [14262/97]

The initial application for the establishment of a secondary school in the town in County Mayo referred to by the Deputy was submitted to my Department in 1995.
This application was rejected on the basis that the establishment of a small school in the area concerned would not enhance the educational provision for pupils in the area and that the wide range of subject provision generally demanded could best be met by the larger schools of the surrounding regions.
A renewed application for a post-primary facility in this area, under the aegis of the vocational education committee, was submitted for consideration to my Department last year.
An in-depth examination of the application has been carried out in the planning section of my Department and I have asked for a report on the matter. When I have had an opportunity to consider the report I will make a decision on the application.
