Vol. 480 No. 7

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Regulations.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

38 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the action, if any, she proposes to take to make out-of-State truck operators subject to Irish road traffic legislation in the same way as Irish operators are amenable to Irish law; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14922/97]

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

40 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will re-introduce the Road Transport Bill which was published in the last session of Dáil Éireann; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14949/97]

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

66 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to the serious effect of overloaded lorries on roads from a safety viewpoint; if she will introduce legislation to make the consignor of such loads responsible in law; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14939/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 38, 40 and 66 together.

My intention is to publish the Road Transport Bill in the next session of the Dáil. The Bill will contain a provision designed to make consignors liable to prosecution in cases of overweight haulage. It is also my intention to develop, in consultation with the Attorney General, a suitable provision aimed at making out of State hauliers answerable for breaches of road transport legislation in Irish courts.
