Vol. 480 No. 7

Written Answers. - Departmental Funding.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

109 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department will urgently respond to the request for funding from an organisation (details supplied) in Dublin 10 which has already been subject to lengthy negotiations in view of the exceptional work this project does with disadvantaged young people. [15125/97]

The application for funding from the Candle Community Trust, Ballyfermot, Dublin 10, is still under consideration by my Department.

I am aware of the valuable work which Candle carries out with young offenders and disadvantaged young people in the Ballyfermot area. The application is in respect of a very considerable amount of capital funding for the construction of a new centre.

Candle Community Trust has already been advised that it is not possible to provide funding for this project from my Department's 1997 financial allocation which, in fact, is fully committed at this stage. Their proposal will therefore be considered in light of the amount of funding available for 1998.

Probation and welfare service personnel will be in touch with Candle Community Trust shortly.
