Vol. 480 No. 7

Written Answers. - Issue of Visas.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

110 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kildare was given a temporary visa to visit this country in view of the fact that although Canadian born, both her parents are Irish and she has lived in this country since she was four years old; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15135/97]

My Department has had no contact with the person concerned about the issues raised. Canadian nationals are not subject to a visa requirement for the purpose of seeking to enter the State. It may be that she has experienced difficulties on re-entering the country if she is travelling on a Canadian passport which does not indicate that she has regularised her residency here as required by law. However, the details supplied in the Deputy's question suggest that the person concerned holds Irish and Canadian citizenship. If that is the case, it is open to the person concerned to apply for an Irish passport for travel purposes.
