102 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the amount it would cost to provide a £3,000 grant under the same terms currently available for new houses in respect of the purchase by first-time buyers of second-hand houses costing less than £90,000. [15216/97]

It is tentatively estimated that the cost of a grant of £3,000 to each first-time purchaser of a second-hand house valued at less than £90,000 would have been of the order of £35 million to £40 million in 1996.
