Vol. 480 No. 8

Written Answers. - Education Budget.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

125 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science whether he has carried out an assessment of the investment needs over the next five years of the primary, secondary, third-level non-university and university sectors; the level of investment needed in each sector; and if he will make a statement on the way in which these needs can be funded within the budgetary framework agreed with the Department of Finance. [15270/97]

The investment and resource needs of the education sector are the subject of ongoing assessment and review in my Department in the light of present education policy and proposed future developments.

The resource implications of present and future educational developments are the subject of discussions between this Department and the Department of Finance. Currently discussions in relation to finalising the 1998 expenditure provisions for my Department are at an advanced stage. These provisions will be set out in the 1998 Abridged Estimates and Public Capital Programme volume which it is proposed to publish in the context of the 1998 budget.
