Vol. 481 No. 5

Written Answers - Social Welfare Benefits.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

110 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if he will review the decision by his officials not to grant a bus pass to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 13. [16728/97]

Under the free travel scheme operated by my Department, people aged 66 years or over and certain incapacitated people under that age are entitled to travel free of charge on the services provided by certain transport companies and bus and ferry operators.

A free travel pass may be granted to a person under age 66 where he or she is in receipt of invalidity pension, blind person's pension or disability allowance or where the person is aged 18 years or over and is registered as a blind person with the National Council/League of the Blind of Ireland.

The person concerned is aged under 66 years and is in receipt of unemployment assistance which is not a qualifying payment for the purpose of the scheme. In the circumstances, he is not entitled to receive a free travel pass.
