Vol. 481 No. 6

Written Answers - Roads Funding.

Ceist:

127 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government whether he will make money available to develop Cork Street, Dublin 8; and the plans, if any, he has to construct a modern roadway through Cork Street and regenerate the environment of the area. [16744/97]

Responsibility for the improvement and maintenance of its nonnational roads, including Cork Street, is a matter for Dublin Corporation, on the basis of its own financial resources supplemented by grants provided by my Department.

An environmental impact study on the Cork Street/Coombe relief route was submitted by the Corporation to the then Minister for the Environment on 6 September 1994. However the Corporation have indicated that they are still preparing compulsory purchase orders for the acquisition of the necessary lands for the scheme which must also be submitted for ministerial confirmation. In accordance with usual practice and for reasons of administrative efficiency, I intend that the EIS will be dealt with in conjunction with the CPOs as soon as possible after the latter have been received. If appropriate, a public local inquiry will be held.
