21 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the OECD report on Adult Literacy; and the additional provision, if any, he proposes in the 1998 Estimate for adult education. [16576/97]
The report to which the Deputy refers will shortly be published by my Department. I intend as a matter of priority to develop responses to the literacy problems which the report will highlight. This matter will be addressed in the forthcoming green paper.
In regard to funding, I am happy to inform the Deputy that I have been successful in obtaining additional funding in the current year in respect of adult literacy programmes. I am seeking a substantial increase in funding for adult education in 1998, in the context of the ongoing Estimate discussions.
