Vol. 483 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

373 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will confirm that a remedial teacher was withdrawn in the past year from a school (details supplied) in Dublin 17; if this teacher will be reinstated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20234/97]

I would like to reassure the Deputy that my Department has not withdrawn a remedial teacher from the school in question in the past year. The school mentioned by him has had a remedial teacher service since 1982 and continues to have such a service. However, following a review of this service in 1995 and on the advice of my Department's inspectorate, the service was extended to cover a second school in the area. I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the school to which he refers will be considered in the context of any further expansion of the remedial service which may be undertaken.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

374 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education and Science when a remedial and resource teacher will be appointed as promised to a school (details supplied) in County Meath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20235/97]

I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that there are many competing demands for increased funding in all sectors of education. These demands are considered within the overall budgetary constraints. I can assure the Deputy that the position of this school will be kept under review and will be considered when next it is possible to allocate additional remedial or resource posts.
