Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent to which in-service training for teachers is scheduled on Saturdays; whether a greater proportion of in-service training for music teachers is scheduled on Saturdays than in other subject areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Details of the particular days of the week on which in-service courses take place are not stored on a Department database.
All in-service work is commissioned from, or contracted to, suitable institutions or organisations outside the Department. In addition to major inservice programmes provided in connection with curricular reform, a wide range of other inservice courses is also provided for teachers by suitable institutions, organisations or groups.
Participation in in-service which takes place outside of normal school time is voluntary.
