Vol. 483 No. 3

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

382 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science the degree course, if any, there is in Social Science at University College, Cork which does not qualify for higher education grants; if so, the reason for the exclusion of this course from the higher education grants scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20416/97]

Under the terms of the higher education grants scheme, grants are payable to eligible students in respect of their attendance at approved courses, which are defined to include a full-time undergraduate course of not less than two years duration pursued in the National University of Ireland Cork. Therefore students pursuing the full-time degree course in social science at the University are eligible for grants under the scheme.

I understand that the National University of Ireland Cork is proposing to deliver the course on an outreach basis in Wexford. In that context my Department is at present considering, in consultation with the Higher Education Authority, a proposal from the National University of Ireland Cork to have the course in Wexford deemed eligible for student support purposes.
