Vol. 483 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cable Television Charges.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

114 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Public Enterprise whether she has control over the fee levels charged for the provision of cable television services. [20358/97]

The licensing of cable and MMDS television operators is carried out pursuant to the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1926 and in accordance with the Wireless Telegraphy (Wired Broadcast Relay Licence) Regulations, 1974, as amended, and the Wireless Telegraphy (Television Programme Retransmission) Regulations, 1989. Responsibility for the exercise of powers pursuant to those regulations including those relating to fees charged, was transferred to the Director of Telecommunications under the Telecommunications (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1996 from 30 June, 1997.

The Director is independent in the performance of her functions and, therefore, I have no function in this matter.
