Vol. 483 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cable Television.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

60 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will make a statement on the outcome of her meeting with representatives of a company (details supplied) regarding their proposal for music cable television channel; if she will outline her response to the proposal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20653/97]

I refer the Deputy to my replies to Questions Nos. 205 and 211 of 14 October 1997 and to Question No. 34 of 23 October 1997. The position is that Cablelink which provides cable television services in Dublin, Galway and Waterford has sought an amendment to its cable television licence which would authorise the relay of the proposed "cable only" music television service referred to by the Deputy. I have no function in the regulation of cable television systems. However, I have been asked for views from a broadcasting policy perspective on the proposal. I have met the person who has proposed the establishment of the music television service and I am considering his and other relevant views on the matter. I hope to convey my views to the Director of Telecommunications Regulation, who has responsibility for the regulation of cable television systems, in the immediate future.
