Vol. 484 No. 2

Written Answers. - Air Quality.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

123 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the proposals, if any, he has to introduce a national air quality strategy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21750/97]

Air quality in Ireland is generally good and according to the most recent monitoring results available meets all mandatory national and EU ambient standards. I have no plans to introduce a national air quality strategy; management planning in this area is a local authority function under the Air Pollution Act, 1987. I also refer to the reply to Question No. 126 of 27 November 1997 in which I outlined current and prospective developments at EU level, supported by Ireland, in regard to new air quality standards, and indicated that the EPA is preparing a national air quality monitoring programme.
