Vol. 484 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

Ceist:

124 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason the Tallaght Unmarried Fathers Group were unsuccessful in their application for a grant under the voluntary and community grant scheme from his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21788/97]

Tallaght unmarried fathers group submitted an application for funding under the scheme of grants for lone parents administered by my Department.

The purpose of this scheme is to provide funding for initiatives to assist lone parents to return to work or to take up second chance education and training opportunities.

The emphasis of the scheme is on making relatively small grants to a large number of local groups and the maximum grant available under the scheme is 90 per cent of the initiative.

A very large number of applications for funding under the scheme of grants for lone parents were received in the Dublin west region but, it was not possible to meet all the demands within the resources available including that from the Tallaght Unmarried Fathers Group which submitted an application for £12,500.

Grants ranging from £500 to £3,500 and averaging £1,350 each were paid to a number of groups in the Dublin west region.
