Vol. 484 No. 2

Written Answers. - Adult Literacy.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

76 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to deal the problem identified in Education 2000, the International Adult Literacy Survey, Results for Ireland which showed that one quarter of Irish adults have the literacy skills of an average 12 year old; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21625/97]

The recent OECD report on adult literacy in Ireland gives some cause for concern. My Department will be considering the issues raised in this report, but, as an immediate response, I have obtained an increase in the provision for adult literacy of £2 million for 1998. I will continue to increase funding in this area as resources become available.

I am committed to improving the literacy services within a policy framework for all aspects of adult education. The development of these services will be a prominent feature of the forthcoming Green Paper on adult education.
