Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Superannuation Schemes.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

209 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the PRSI and health levies currently paid by retired semi-State employees on private occupational superannuation schemes; the portion, if any, of these which are due if the person has a medical card or if the exemption is up to a certain pension level; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21861/97]

People in receipt of occupational pensions, including retired semi-State employees, are classified in PRSI Class K, and are not subject to social insurance contributions. They are, however, liable for the 1.25 per cent health contribution and the 1 per cent employment and training levy where their income exceeds £197 per week or £10,250 per annum. No contributions are payable where income is below this threshold, which is being increased to £207 per week or £10,750 per annum with effect from 6 April 1998. All medical card holders are exempt from liability to the health contribution and the employment and training levy.
