Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Waste Disposal.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

229 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Health and Children the location of the proposed disposal plant for the shredding and disinfection of hospital waste, further to the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 277 of 2 December 1997; if the residue from this will be dumped in a landfill; if so, the location of such a landfill; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22009/97]

It is envisaged that the treated health care risk waste will enter the municipal waste stream and be sent to landfill. Pending the awarding of the contract, it is not possible to say what the precise arrangements will be, but it is likely that treatment plants will be located in Dublin and Cork. The particular landfill sites to be used will be a matter between the waste disposal contractor and the relevant local authorities.
