Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - General Register Office.

Beverley Flynn

Ceist:

230 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason for the delay in setting up the General Registrar Office of the Department of Health and Children in Roscommon as was originally planned; and when the next phase of civil servants will be starting in Roscommon. [22010/97]

The General Register Office archive conversion project is currently under way in Roscommon. This project involves the capture of the records of over 150 years of births, deaths and marriages and associated indexes. The project, employing 40 FÁS trainees and 16 civil servants, will take approximately three years to complete. The second phase of the project, which will take place on completion of the computerisation of the archive, will involve the transfer of the administrative sections of the General Register Office to Roscommon.
